Ayanna Black's Invoking the Spirits, the latest book of poetry signed by one of the Black pioneer poetress in Canada, will be unveiled in Toronto on Thursday, March 20, from 7 to 9 pm.
The launch will take place in the bookshop, A Different Booklist, located on 746 Bathurst Street at Bloor.
Invoking the Spirits is a moving quest for an "imaginary" Father. In her hauting search, Ayanna Black weaves her yearning, a political chant for Africa, her ancestral land, her ancestral music. As she travels from Germany to Mexico and back home to Toronto, she explores and integrates other cultural histories with her own personal sense of loss.
Ayanna Black was born in Jamaica, and lived in England for several years before emigrating to Canada in 1964. Her work has been anthologized in Canada and in the Caribbean. She is one of the founding members of Tiger Lily, Canada's first magazine by women of colour. She also contributes to Fuse magazine, writing on cultural, social and political issues. She has conducted poetry workshops in the schools, and has given readings in major cities in Canada, the U.S, England, and Italy.

She is such a powerful author. I love her poetry, as it speaks to women of my generation. I hope she will come to do some readings in Vancouver... Susan M. Jackson
